Otonye (my 7yr old daughter) was talking rather excitedly about her new room. “oh mum, pls can we move to a bigger house so I can have a bigger room with a rainbow castle bed, it’s kind of like a castle but with a rainbow across (wow!). She went on to say she w’ld like to have her own mirror, a laptop and reading table. She talked quite passionately about this new house and how she would have her friends for a sleep over.
I let her have her moment and after she was done, I asked her how she would feel if we bought a place like this and she said "I’ll be so happy". So I thought it was a perfect opportunity for a life lesson :-)
Like Otonye, there are some things you want that you believe will bring you greater satisfaction. The promotion, the nice house, getting married, starting your own business etc. And yes it’s great to have all these things. But how much satisfaction will they bring you?
What makes life exciting and fulfilling is not your accomplishments, your newest collectibles, people you know in high places. It’s about having the fundamentals in place, i.e. relationships you can depend on, people who love you and want to see you succeed, people you can laugh and cry with, a loving family to come back home to, a house you can call home, being a beacon of light to someone else who’s lost their way. These are the simple things that make life truly worth it.
Make no mistakes it’s great and necessary that you aim for higher things in life but before you do all that, make sure you have the fundamentals in place.
